Letter not found; M's letter was read at a meeting of the Port Fairy Borough Council on 8 May 1872. At the meeting of the Council on 24 April 1872, 'Gardens Committee reported that the laborer was employed preparing ground for plants also that list of plants had been prepared which were to be applied for at Geelong and Melbourne' (minute book 4, p. 208).

The Council 'Resolved that the thanks of the Council be forwarded to the Doctor and an acknowledgment be made in the Argus and local papers'. Letter of thanks not found. On 21 May 1872, the Banner of Belfast reported: 'A very fine collection of plants has been received for the Botanical Gardens from Dr. Von. Mueller of the Melbourne Botanical Gardens. Evidently packed with great care they have arrived in first-class order, and no doubt under the skilful hands of our curator will shortly add an additional charm to the gardens. If the worthy Doctor acts as liberally to the other public gardens of the colony we are sure he may with confidence "Look over the heads" of his detractors to the people beyond, who will not be slow to acknowledge the benefit received at his hands.'
