Hochgeehrter Herr Doctor

Seit meinem ergebenen Schreiben aus Brighton ddo 7 Nov 71, soeben hieher von einer längeren Mittelmeer Reise zurückgekehrt, beeile ich mich Ihnen für die mir übersandten zwei Abhandlungen bestens zu danken u. auch die anliegende Abschrift eines mir mit Verspätung zugekommenen Ministerial Schreibens ddo Wien 15 Janr. 1872 beizuschliessen. Ich lasse dasselbe unbeantwortet , weil der ewige Minister=Wechsel in Oestreich

ein Verhandeln mit den Central Stellen gar zu langweilig macht. Als ich die Möglichkeit einer Bewaldung Dalmatiens mit Ihnen besprach, war ein mir befreundeter Kavalier, Graf Potozky Ackerbau=Minister. Seitdem sind drei Ministerien im Laufe von achzehn Monaten vorhanden gewesen, u. zwei ganz gewöhnliche Kanzlei=Spatzen Ackerbau Minister geworden, die ich weder kenne, noch zu kennen wünsche.

Sollten Sie, geehrter Herr Doctor, die betreffende Angelegenheit dennoch zu fördern gedenken, so wäre wohl das geeignetste Mittel Ihre directe Correspondenz mit den Persönlichkeiten fortzusetzen, deren Namen Sie in Ihrem Briefe vom 9t/9/71 erwähnen.

Was den fieber vertreibenden Baum betrifft, so wäre dessen Anpflanzung in Pola u an der Narenta in Dalmatien gewiss ein Segen.

Ebenso in der Campagna von Rom, Terracina &c &c. doch hierüber müssten Sie sich mit dem Italienischen Consul in Melbourne benehmen. Er schien mir ein intelligenter Mann zu seyn.

Since my humble letter from Brighton dated 7 November 1871,

and just returned here from a lengthy Mediterranean voyage, I hasten to thank you kindly for the two publications you sent me, and also to forward the enclosed copy of a Ministerial communication dated Vienna, 15 January 1872, that reached me belatedly. I am leaving it unanswered , as, with the constant Ministerial changes in Austria, any negotiations with the central offices become far too drawn out. When I discussed with you the possibility of an afforestation of Dalmatia, a gentleman and friend of mine, Count Potozky, was Minister for Agriculture. Since then there have been three different Ministries in the space of eighteen months, and two quite common clerks became Ministers for Agriculture, whom I neither know nor wish to know.

If you, esteemed Doctor, still intend to pursue this particular matter, the most suitable means would be to continue your direct correspondence with the persons whose names you mentioned in your letter of 9 September 1871.

Letter not found. M had already despatched seeds for the afforestation of Dalmatia to Eduard Fenzl in Vienna, several months before Jochmus wrote; see M to E. Fenzl, 14 October 1871. Fenzl was no doubt one of those whom M would have mentioned in the letter to which Jochmus refers.

As to the tree for the eradication of fever, its cultivation in Pola

&c., &c. but you would have to confer on this with the Italian Consul in Melbourne. He seemed to me to be an intelligent man.
