Melbourne bot. Garden
6/2/72.
Sir
In reply to your letter,
received last night, I have the honor to inform you, that I was requested by the honorable
the President of the Board of Lands and Works
to submit to (him also) a counter report to the Document of the Board of the botanic Garden, a copy of the
Document being sent to me also by the Direction of the President.
1
See T. Ware to M, 5 February 1872.
2
James Grant, returned to office in Gavan Duffy's administration, 19 June 1871.
I understood also indirectly from Mr. Grant, that the bot. Gardens Department was to be placed under his administration.
The honorable Gentleman having proceeded to Sydney, I was left under the impression, that my counter report would only be required after his return and thus
I left it unfinished.
Being now requested, to forward my answers to the honorable the Chief Secretary, I
shall hasten to finish the required document and forward it to Mr. Duffy in a few
days.
3
M in fact submitted his response the same day; M to C. Gavan Duffy, 6 February 1872.
I have the honor to be,
Sir, your obedient servant
Ferd. von Mueller, M.D.,
Direct. botan. Garden.
T. Ware Esq.
Acting Undersecretary.
