Let me thank you, dear Mr Clarke, for the very handsome manner, in which you alluded
in your preface to my forest lecture.
It is very pleasing to me, to see my literary efforts so kindly acknowledged by an
author of eminence like yourself.

B71.13.03. The introduction to the volume in which M's essay appeared includes (p.
v):
The lecture of Baron Von Mueller will appear specially interesting at a time when
the condition of our State forests is attracting attention, and a Royal Commission
deliberating as to their extent and preservation. We believe that this lecture has
been both opportune and valuable in directing public attention to the subject, and
that the services of Baron Von Mueller will be fully recognised on the perusal of
the lecture.

A note on the file suggests that a reply was sent on 5 December. No such reply has
been found. However, if it was sent, it was evidently seen as private correspondence,
since no letter number is given.
With best regards
