Chief Secretary's Office,
Melbourne 23rd October 1871.
Sir,
Referring to previous correspondence
I have the honor to inform you that with a view to the Industrial Schools Department
receiving credit for the work done by the inmates, an arrangement has been sanctioned
by the Chief Secretary by which an account for the labor performed in the Botanic
Gardens will be submitted to you periodically by the Inspector of Industrial Schools,
which, when checked and found correct, you will be good enough to initial and return
to that officer, as his voucher.

See M to C. Duffy, 5 October 1871.

The agreement seems to have been followed. In November
three
accounts 'for labor of boys in Botanical Gardens £61.1.0 £76.17.0 & £77.5.0' were submitted
to the Government from the Industrial School (No. 14329, vol. 1871 Z, VPRS 1168/P
inward correspondence registers, VA 475 Chief Secretary's Department, Public Record
Office, Victoria).
I have the honor to be,
Sir,
Your most obedient servant,
W. H. Odgers
The Director
Botanic Gardens.
