Seit längerer Zeit, edler Herr, war es meine Absicht Ihnen eine Sendung Samen zukommen zu lassen, welche nach einer im vorigen Jahre stattgefundenen Besprechung mit Sr Excellenz Feldmarschall Baron Jochmus, für Baumculturen in Dalmatien bestimmt sind. Dazu habe ich noch Samen von , u gesandt Es wäre doch immer eine schöne Einführung in den österreichischen Staat, wenn der Wuchs dieser Bäume dort gelänge, was in den wärmern Inseln Dalmatiens mir möglich erscheint, da unsere Eucalypten einen gelinden Frost ertragen.

Die Entdeckung, dass die Eucalypten auch im Wechselfieber angewandt werden können, giebt diesen Bäumen eine noch höhere Wichtigkeit.

Der Herr Baron von Jochmus schrieb mir aus Wien, dass Sr Excellenz der Handelsminister Dr Schaeffle u Sr Excellenz der Gouverneur von Dalmatien, Feldmarschall Baron Rodich, diesen Versuchsculturen ihren hohen Schutz werden angedeihen lassen, u dass die Inseln Lesina u Lacroma wohl für diesen Zweck die geeignetsten sein würden. Sollten nun die Erfolge diesen ersten Versuches ermuthigend sein, so könnte ich nach u nach viele andere Arten von Eucalyptus für Aussaat liefern, dann auch die u Acacia Arten, welche grössere Dimensionen erreichen u für Medicin oder Gewerbe mannichfaltigen

mannigfaltigen.

Nutzen gewähren.

last year, it has been my intention to furnish you with a consigment of seeds, destined for tree plantations in Dalmatia. Several circumstances outside my control have delayed the dispatch of these seeds, but the matter has now finally been taken in hand and you will receive through my agents in London (Blackith & Co., Cox's Quay, Lower Thames Street) for your gracious acceptance

In addition I have also sent seed of , and . It would, after all, be a fine introduction for the Austrian State, should the cultivation of these trees succeed there, which in the warmer islands of Dalmatia seems a possibility to me since our eucalypts will tolerate mild frosts.

The discovery that eucalypts can also be used in the treatment of malaria makes these trees even more important.

and His Excellency the Governor of Dalmatia, Field Marshal Baron Rodich, will give these test plantations their illustrious patronage, and that the islands Lesina and Lacroma would probably be best suited to this purpose. Should the success of these first attempts prove to be encouraging, I could, over a period of time, send many other species of Eucalyptus for sowing, also and Acacia species that reach larger dimensions and provide resources useful to medicine or trade.

I hope, dear Professor, that you enjoy the best of health and that you may spend a long and serene old age in the happy circle of your family, and I remain respectfully your
