The main object of writing to you this time, dear Mr Bentham, is to inform you, that
the Government on my request will send by this months mail the £100 – – for vol. VI
of the flora;
so that you are likely to receive this sum whenever you will kindly call on Mr Verdon,
the Agent General of Victoria. I must now also learn what further plants you stand
in need of, in order that no impediment to the elaboration of the volume may arise,
and I be able to forward the desired material in right time. My scientific work has
been for the whole of 1871 almost at a stand still, owing to the enormous loss of
time still daily involved in defending my position from intrusion and ruin.
