Dear Sir
In answer to your polite note of the above date
I have the honor to state that the Entertainment will embrace the best musical talent
obtainable in Melbourne and every means taken to ensure success. I propose after deducting
expenses for printing, publishing, artists &c. to divide half the net proceeds amongst
the principal Local Charities and should be glad to send a cheque to Mr Sturt. P.
M. to distribute to his best way of thinking I have the pleasure of forwarding you
a notice of a complimentary Benefit given by the principal residents of Ballarat for
my Exertions in promoting the welfare of Local Charities in that district
I think the day suitable for the concert would be Saturday the 21st of Nr.
ensuing — and should prefer it possible the first [...] of the sesaon An early reply
will greatly oblige.

Enclosed with Jacobs's letter is a newspaper cutting of a printed letter with a large
number of signatories, addressed to 'Dr. Guthrie Carr, D.P.S. and M.P.A.L.' and dated
Ballarat, 20 February 1867, seeking Carr's co-operation in a 'Complimentary Benefit'
for Coleman Jacobs 'in appreciation of his talents as first-class pianist, and his
readiness at all times to give his services to local charities'.
