The following note was found attached to MS No 582, folder 209, M to J. Haast, 25 July 1871, but is obviously McCoy’s note referred to in this letter: 'What is Haasts message?
He made such an offer some years ago & when I sent the box of Bird skins he sent no
Moa bones but only some bird skins which I already had.'
Melbourne Botanic Garden,
10 August 1871.
I have asked Professor McCoy, dear compatriot, to send you new contributions for your
Museum, but the enclosed note expresses his dissatisfaction, that he did not receive
the Diornis bones he had expected.
Well, with your superabundance of Moa materials that can be easily remedied.
Always your
Ferd. von Mueller.
Please do not insult McCoy, should there be a misunderstanding.
