Sir
Allow me to ask whether you have any means of obliging me by ascertaining the approximate quantity of wood, sold for fuel in your township. It occurs to me that probably you have some wood-market where information may be obtained; also perhaps that tolls exist, where some sort of record is kept of the number of wood carts passing. I am anxious to learn the approximate quantity used in 1870, to append statistic notes on fuel supply to a public document which I am about to issue.

In B71.13.11, pp. 24-5, M presented data from 'various official returns' on the current consumption of wood in various districts of Victoria including Sandhurst (i.e. Bendigo), for which he adds 'the approximate quantity used solely for fuel' provided by 'another informant', presumably Fletcher.
With obedience

Ferd. von Mueller
