Whereas by the Statutes of the New Zealand Institute, established under the provisions of "The New Zealand Institute Act, 1867," of the General Assembly of New Zealand, for the promotion of Science, Arts, and Literature, provision is made for the Election of Honorary Members by the Board of Governors from persons who shall have been nominated for such honorary membership by the Societies incorporated under the Act:

Director of the Botanical Gardens, Melbourne was on the sixth day of January 1871 duly elected, in accordance with the provisions of the said Statutes, to be an Honorary Member of the New Zealand Institute, in recognition of the services he has rendered to the Colony by his contributions to its Botany, as published in his "Fragmenta Phytographieae
