MS written by G. Luehmann and signed by M.
25th March 1871
Sir
I have the honor to solicit that you will sanction the transfer of a sum of Fifty
five pounds — £55.- . — from the Vote for Wages to Gardeners to the Vote for Stores, Stationery, Timber &c.
This latter vote, which had already been considerably reduced in 1870, was lowered
still more for 1871, and is inadequate to meet the demands of the Department. A considerable
sum had to be transferred last year to the Wages vote, as heavy expenditure had been
incurred in the beginning of the year before reductions now made; therefore I consider
it but just, that the very much needed transfer of the above mentioned sum may be
made from this vote.
I beg to enclose requisition for coals for the engine and hot houses, for paper &c.
for the museum, and for flowerpots.
I have the honor to be Sir
Your obedient servant
Ferd. von Mueller,
Director Botanic Garden
The Honorable the Chief Secretary

McCulloch minuted his approval for the requests, under which, in an unknown hand,
was added: '(requisition approved. Papers to be returned early)'.
