Melbourne bot Garden
Christmas eve
1870
Herewith, dear Sir Redmond, I send a list of some of the phytographic works, of which the public Library stands much in need. Mr Tulk on careful reference may however find, that one or the other of these works is already contained in your Library.

See also M to R. Barry, 24 December 1870 (in this edition as 70-12-24a). Some of the works M lists were suggested, sometimes with minor differences in details of title and date, in M to R. Barry, 5 October 1866 (in this edition as 66-10-05a).
If the trustees think the acquisition of all these works too heavy a tax on the funds of your institution for 1871, I would suggest to omit for the present Hooker's bot. Magazine, as I have received from my London Bookseller this Magazine monthly since many years, so that my copy is complete, while yours had no arrears for at least 10 years.
Baillons work might also be omitted, as I have the original french edition from the author, who is my intimate friend. For Booths

i.e., Boott.
Carices we are also less pressed. Reichenbach's Xenia might also stand over, as I have the text (though not the superb plates) in other works.
All the works, noted, are standard ones.
With my best salutation and wishes for the Christmas & new year your
Ferd. von Mueller

There are three series in Gay's work, History, Zoology and Botany. M presumably was asking for the botany series, Gay (1845-5 2 ), to be acquired ; this was one of the works he had requested in 1866 . The State Library of Victoria has the complete series of 28 volumes. Vol . 1 of the Atlas to the whole series includes illustrations of plants.

i.e. Van Houtte (1845-80); by the time M wrote, the first 18 of the ultimate 23 volumes had been published (see TL2). Although Lemaire is the first of three authors listed on the title page of vol. 1 and is listed among many names in some later volumes, he is not included in all of the volumes published by 1870. The TL2 entry also contains a discussion of the way that collaborators ('rédacteurs') are listed.
