Clarke is identified as likely correspondent since he was Secretary of the Industrial
and Technological Museum. MS is in M's hand. There is an annotation in another hand:
'From the date 7th of Nov. — engage Mr Hoffmann as Phytological Chemist under direction
of Dr Von Mueller, at £14.6. a month but cannot pay for months Sept & October as suppose
work was departmental 76/I.T.M.'. The annotation has been initialled 'SHB' [i.e. Samuel
Bindon].
