Letter not found; item is a register entry only, of a letter dated 18 August 1870. On 18 July 1870, William Ferguson wrote to McCulloch asking that quarters be provided for him in the
Botanic Garden (No. 8872, vol. 1870 V, VPRS 1168/P, Public Record Office, Victoria). Although no covering letter has been found, Ferguson's letter would have been transmitted through M, as Ferguson had recently
been reprimanded for making direct contact; see M to W, Odgers, 1 June 1870, n. 2. On 4 August, the register entry was annotated: 'Director to provide with quarters
to which Mr F entitled'.

M's letter was referred back to him on 22 August 1870 minuted: 'how many houses are in the Gardens?'. M returned the letter to the Chief Secretary's Office on 30 August. See also M to J. McCulloch, 26 August 1870
(in this edition as 70-08-26a).
