Vor einigen Tagen, geehrter Herr Professor, wurde ich durch die Ankunft einer sehr werthvollen Sendung von Algen u Schriften aus Ihrer Hand sehr freudig überrascht. Lassen Sie mich sowohl für Ihre Güte als für die Belehrung, welche Sie mir gewährten bestens danken. Über die Algen von der Chatham Insel werde ich einen kurzen Bericht geben nach den von Ihnen vorliegenden Bestimmungen, im Journal der wissenschaftlich Gesellschaft in Neu Seeland, da Dr Hooker in seinem Manual keine Algen von dieser Gruppe erwähnt. Ich glaube, diese Algen kamen alle in meine Hand allein. Es sind 7 neu für die Flora von N. Seeland.

Wie sehr ist es zu bedauern, dass wir kein Werk mit Diagnosen (kurz gefasst) über die Algen der Erde besitzen, um dadurch Arbeitern an fernen Küsten die Mittel zum unabhängigen Bearbeitungen zu geben. Würde nicht Ihre unvergleichliche Erfahrung uns ein solches Werk zugänglich machen?

Für die Benennungen der Algen Port Phillips bin ich verpflichtet. Ich werde von Zeit zu Zeit noch andere senden für Ihre freundliche Annahme. Das eine oder andere neue möchte sich auch noch leicht darunter finden.

A few days ago, respected Professor, I was very pleasantly surprised by the arrival of a very valuable transmission of algae and papers from your hand. Permit me to thank you very much for your kindness as well as for the information you imparted to me. I shall make a brief report on the algae of the Chatham Islands according to the determinations provided by you in the journal of the scientific Society in New Zealand,

as Dr Hooker does not mention any algae from this group in his manual.

Hooker (1864-7).

I believe, these algae came all solely into my hands. Seven of them are new for the Flora of New Zealand.

It is to be greatly regretted, that we do not have a work with diagnoses (briefly stated) on the algae of the world, to thereby give workers on distant coasts the means for independent researches. Could not your incomparable experience make such a work available to us?

I am obliged for the naming of the Port Phillip algae. I shall send others periodically for your kind acceptance. The odd new one may easily still be found among them.
