This letter was referred back to M on 19 July 1870 marked 'forwarded', and returned to the Chief Secretary's office on 24 July.
M had been informed on 11 July 1870 that the trustees of the Industrial Museum needed
a formal application to send specimens of wood to the Agricultural Society of New
South Wales Metropolitan Intercolonial Exhibition; see M to E. Montifiore, 12 July 1870. The letter to McCulloch may have been prompted by that information. There were many
other exhibits attributed to M, sometimes alone and sometimes as 'on behalf of the
Victorian Government' or 'for the Government' (Intercolonial Exhibition (Sydney, 1870)
(1870), passim). B70.13.05 is a report of M's investigations on the fibres exhibited at exhibition.
