Sir
I have the honor to transmit herewith a letter, addressed to you and brought to this
office by the Inspector of forests.

On 8 June 1870, William Ferguson wrote to McCulloch: 'I have the honor to report that acting upon instructions
received through Dr Von Mueller, I proceeded to the Industrial Schools at Sunbury
on the 6th inst. and carefully examined the ground at present being prepared for planting
with ornamental trees &c. I have much pleasure in reporting, that I found the ground
in a forward state of preparation, and ready for receiving some hundreds of Trees.
— also that every necessary care has been taken to ensure success. — Mr Scott Superintendent
and Mr Dickson, accompanied me over the ground, and to them, I gave instructions as
to the best system of planting, and the most suitable trees, for the various aspects,
and soils.'
Ferguson's letter was referred to the Inspector of the Industrial Schools, George Duncan, on 14 June. It was noted by him and returned. The visit arose from a request, enclosed with M to J. McCulloch, 31 May 1870 (in this edition as 70-05-31e), from Duncan that Ferguson advise on free planting at Sunbury Industrial School.
I have the honor to be,
Sir,
your obedient servant
Ferd. von Mueller
Direct. botan Garden.
The honorable the Chief Secretary
