I forwarded the memorandum respecting an article in the Argus, to the Inspector of forests and have now the honor to send a letter, supposed to contain his answer, the contents of the letter being unknown to me.

The Under Secretary, W. Odgers, returned William Ferguson's letter to M on 31 May 1870 with the following instruction: 'Mr Fergusson's reply to the Chief Secretary's inquiry must be sent in the usual official way viz through Dr. Mueller and open and in any communication he desires to address to me on public business he will be good enough to adopt my official title of Under Secretary. Dr Mueller will so inform him.' M minuted on 1 June: 'Minute of the Undersecretary submitted for perusal to the Inspector of forests and for his information. Letter herewith returned.'
