Melbourne Bot. Garden,
24/5/70
Sir.
In reply to your letter,
1
See T. Higinbotham to M, 23 May 1870 (in this edition as 70-05-23a).
this day received, I have the honor to observe, that the distribution of plants to public institutions commenced in the beginning of this month, and that the numerous applications reduced the number of plants, fit to go out this season, very much already. I will however endeavour to find yet the one hundred plants for the Railway reserves at Ballarat, and if the vacant places to be filled up are in hedges, it would be necessary to know how many of each kind are to be selected, there being several kinds of in culture. This could be best ascertained by sending a branchlet of each kind to me, with a memorandum of the respective number required.
Perhaps one of the Railway officers would take delivery of the plants at my office.
2
See M to T. Higinbotham, 27 May 1870 (in this edition as 70-05-27d).
I have the honor to be,
Sir, your obed. servant,
Ferd. von Mueller, M.D.,
Direct. botan. Garden.
T. Higinbotham Esq.
Engineer in Chief of the Railway Department &c &c.
