I Beg to hand you the Inclosed account for Tools which were my own property, were
used by me for the Bot Gardens and which were stolen from the Engine house on the
night that it was Broken into in the beginning of March, and request the favour of
a speedy Settlement

The text that follows is on a separate sheet. On 10 May, M noted on the verso of Robertson's letter: 'To ascertain from E. Soues the price or value of these implements'. M sought approval to pay the claim in M to J. McCulloch, 10 May 1870, and McCulloch minuted his approval on 17 May, subject to M's satisfying himself that the claim was reasonable.
