Melbourne botan. Garden
10/5/70
Sir
I have the honor to submit an application of the discharged engine driver of the botanic
Garden, who claims the sum of four pounds five shillings for tools which were stolen
from the engine house and not recovered, such tools being his private property.
I am anxious to learn your view, whether I am justified to charge this sum to the
incidental vote of the botanic Garden.

See G. Robertson to M, 10 May 1870 (in this edition as 70-05-10a).

McCulloch annotated the file on 17 May 1870: 'If the Director of the Gardens is satisfied
that the Tools were stolen and the Acct claimed is reasonable — I approve of the payt
bg made —'.
On 23 June the Under Treasurer, E. Symonds, noted that the account amounting to £4.5.0
was passed for payment.
I have the honor to be,
Sir, your very obed. servant
Ferd. von Mueller,
Direct. botan. Garden.
The honorable
the Chief Secretary
