Der Zweck dieses Schreibens, edler Freund, ist eigentlich nur, ein Lebenszeichen von mir zu geben. Mehr wie einmal in letzterer Zeit setzte ich mich hin, mich recht ausgedehnt gegen Sie auszusprechen über das, welches gemeinsames Interesse für uns haben möchte; allein der restlos stürmische Gang des Geschäftslebens in einem jungen Lande lässt mir fast nie zu einer ruhigen Besprechung mit erhabenen Freunden wie Sie die nothwendige Zeit, u dazu ist es auch wohl unrecht in Ihre Ruhestunden einzubrechen.

Ich bin nebenher beschäftigt die Monocotyledonen für den 6. u 7. Band der Flora Australiens vorzubereiten, was mühselige Vergleiche erfordert, oft mit unzulänglichem ausländischen Material. Indessen sollte die Vorsehung dem wackern Bentham u auch mir noch einige Jahre Leben u Kraft gönnen, dann werden wir doch wohl wenigstens die Cotyledonen Pflanzen von Ganz-Australien im Zusammenhang vor die Öffentlichkeit bringen.

Erlauben Sie mir Ihre gütige Aufmerksamkeit auf die beigefügten Samen von hinzulenken. In feuchter Walderde möchten solche leicht keimen u Ihnen eine ebenso prächtige als merkwürdige Pflanze für die Sumpfparthien Ihrer Gewächshäuser geben.

The purpose of this letter, noble friend, is really only to give a sign of life from me. More than once in recent times I sat down for an extended letter to you on subjects of common interest to us; however, the restless, stormy passage of business life in a young country hardly ever leaves me sufficient time for a quiet discussion with prominent friends such as you, and in addition it would probably be wrong to invade your quiet life.

Incidentally, I am occupied with preparing the monocotyledons for the 6th and 7th volumes of the Flora of Australia,

requiring laborious comparisons, often with inadequate foreign material. But if Providence should grant the valiant Bentham and also me a few more years of life and strength, we shall at least be able to bring all the cotyledonous plants of the whole of Australia before the public.

Permit me to draw your kind attention to the enclosed seeds of . They should germinate easily in damp forest soil and give you a plant for the swamp section of your conservatories as magnificent as it is unusual.
