Bot. Garden,
6/1/70
Some years ago, dear Sir Redmond, several of my volumes were presented by the trustees of the public library in an elegant form to the Libraries of their Majesties the Emperor of France, the King of Italy & the King of Prussia through their Consuls in acknowledgement of the donations of books to the Melbourne public Library from these Sovereigns.

For Italy and Prussia, see n. 5 to M to F. Parlatore, 24 August 1864, and Darragh & Lucas (2015), pp. 305-6. The gifts from Napoleon III are listed in 'Melbourne Public Library', Argus, 19 February 1864, p. 7, but details of the gift in return have not been found.
Since that time one or two more volumes of mine are published, and it occurs to me, that probably the trustees might wish to complete the series of volumes thus for the Paris, Florence & Berlin Libraries.
It is a mere suggestion of mine, in which I am not interested, but my thought might for the best of the public Library deserve the Trustees consideration
your regardful
Ferd. von Mueller
