Office of Lands and Survey
Melbourne. 21st Decr. 1869.
Sir,
I am directed by the Honorable the Commissioner of Crown Lands and Survey to request
you to call on Mr. Ferguson
to prepare for transmission, through you, to this Office, a Return of the number of
persons employed in connection with your Department, specifying the nature of the
work upon which they are respectively engaged, with a statement of any changes Mr.
Ferguson may have to suggest.
1
William Ferguson.
Mr. McKean, finding on enquiry, that it has hitherto been your practice to engage
and dispense with men, has desired me to state that, in future, all engagements, dismissals
&c., must be sanctioned by the Ministerial Head of your Department.
Applications for employment on your staff must be forwarded to this Department, with
report or recommendation thereon.
I have the honor to be,
Sir
Your most obedient Servant,
John L. Lewis
Dr. F. Von Mueller
