MS annotation by Barlee: [Go]odale know what to do with these plants - please bring this letter before me on my return to Perth | F.P.B. 30-1-70 | Chief Clerk'.
Melbourne, bot Garden
9./12/69
I have the pleasure, dear Mr Barlee, to send you under the obliging care of the Commander of the "Jeannie Oswald" a case with growing plants, which all are likely acceptable to your colony.
2
The plants were instead shipped by the schooner Yarra after the sudden death of the captain of Jeannie Oswald ; see M to F. Barlee, 30 January 1870.
Let me hope, that in distributing them you will not allow them to be planted in waterless and unsheltered or barren localities. Such rare and valuable plants are worthy of close attention and should receive water regularly during dry weather. You could much oblige me by causing the case to be refilled with strong thick sods of heaths, as from such material I can obtain here very many fine pot-plants for my conservatories. When the occasion arises of returning the case perhaps you will indebt me by sending also a bag full of Zamia nuts, as such are always welcome for interchanges.
With best wishes always your
Ferd. von Mueller
