The files contain a summary of the letter that was sent by von Golther to the King via von Eglofstein, Cabinet Chief, on 1 October 1869, and an acknowledgment of its receipt by von Eglofstein on 8 October 1869.

Edler Herr!
Es ist meine sehr angenehme Pflicht, Ew. Excellenz herablassende Zuschrift vom 18. Mai d. J., welche mit letzter Monatspost mich erreichte, anzuerkennen, und für die Huld Sr. Majestät, durch welche unter Ew. Excellenz freundlicher Vermittlung mein erstes Stipendium für naturwissenschaftliche Reisen nun in Ihrem Lande begründet wurde, meinen tiefgefühlten Dank auszudrücken. Die Statuten, welche Ew. Excellenz so umsichtig entworfen, haben nicht nur Herrn Dr. W. Sonder's volle Zustimmung, sondern auch in jeder Beziehung meine Genehmigung; und ich bedaure es nur, dass die vielfachen Obliegenheiten einer hohen Amtsstellung und eines weitverbreiteten wissenschaftlichen Verkehres es mir gerade gleich nicht recht wohl möglich machten, dies Stipendium, wie ich es wünschte, bedeutend zu vergrössern.
Indessen ist es mein fester Entschluss, in nicht gar zu langer Frist ein zweites Stipendium in Ihrem Reiche zu begründen, und zwar in einer solchen Weise, dass dadurch das erste noch erfolgreicher werde.
Ew. Excellenz haben die Güte, auf die freilich nur unbedeutenden wissenschaftlichen Sendungen, die ich dem königlichen Naturalien Cabinette zuzusenden die Ehre hatte, einen für mich sehr ermunternden Werth zu legen, und da ich auch fürderhin, wie in den letzten 2 Jahren, meine Sammlungen fast ausschliesslich dem Stuttgart-Museum zuzuwenden beabsichtige, so gebe ich mich der sehr angenehmen Hoffnung hin, im Laufe künftiger Jahre, welche die Vorsehung mir noch schenken mag, in Ihrer Königsstadt das Naturreich Australiens, das zwar in grossen u. zahlreichen Thierformen nicht dem Südafrika's gleicht, doch in einer lehrreichen u. erfreulichen Weise vertreten zu sehen, zumal da ausgezeichnete Männer des Wissens dort wirken, und dies ist ein um so ermuthigender Gedanke, als Seine Majestät, Ihr Königlicher Herr, den Naturwissenschaften unter allen Herrschern so hervorragend seinen Schutz weiht.

which reached me with last month's mail, and to express my deeply felt gratitude for His Majesty's graciousness, through which, — by Your Excellency's kind mediation, — my first foundation for natural history travels has now been established in your country. The statutes, so circumspectly drawn up by Your Excellency,

They were in fact drawn up by F. von Krauss and W. Sonder in consultation, as M has requested, and passed on to Golther for approval and ratification. The statutes of the Mueller Foundation, based on a donation by M of £600, were signed by Golther on 18 May 1869 (in this edition as M69-05-18).
do not only have Dr W. Sonder's full agreement, but also my assent in every aspect. I only regret, that the manifold obligations of high public office and of a wide scientific correspondence did not permit me just now substantially to enlarge the foundation, as I had wished.
However, it is my firm resolve, to establish a second foundation in your country in the not too distant future, and that in such a way, that the first will be ensured of even greater success.
Your Excellency had the kindness, to place a for me very encouraging value on the admittedly only very insignificant scientific transmissions, which I had the honour to send to your Royal Natural History Museum, and as I intend in future to direct my collections almost exclusively to the Stuttgart Museum, as I have done during the past 2 years, I entertain the very pleasant hope, that in the course of those future years, which Providence may yet grant me, I shall see Australia's kingdom of nature represented in your royal city, and though perhaps not as large and plentiful in the forms of its fauna as South Africa, yet in an instructive and pleasing manner, all the more, as such excellent men of science work there. And this is an all the more encouraging thought, as His Majesty, your Royal Sovereign, grants his patronage to the natural sciences so pre-eminently among all the rulers.
