Letter glued to inside cover of Fragmenta phytographiae australiae, vol. 1, which has an inscription by M: 'Carlo Darwin, naturae scrutatori tam ingenioso quam sedulo, haecce fragmina obtulit scriptor' [The writer offers this fragment to Charles Darwin, a naturalist as ingenious as diligent].
MS annotation by [Kippist]: 'Answd Dec 3/69 via Marses [Marseliies]'. Letter not found.

I have packed up, dear Mr. Kippist, this day all the fascicles & plates of the fragmenta, still available, to complete your set, as far as possible.
The work will soon be a rare one as the edition was originally small.
If the good Mr Heward will let me know what he has received, I will do also for him what I can.
Your package is placed in Dr Hooker’s box intended to go soon to Kew.

M's gift of 'Vol. 5 (fasc. 31-40), Vol. 6, (fasc.41-49), and Vol 7 (fasc. 50–52)', is recorded in 'Additions to the Library of the Linnean Society received from June 16, 1869, to June 16, 1870', p. xxii in Proceedings of the Linnean Society of London, session 1869-70.
Your regardful
Ferd von Mueller

There is a letter from Charles Darwin to [Richard Kippist]: '31 January. My Dear Sir, You are most welcome to the Fragmenta & I shall be delighted if they are of the slightest use to you, — Yours sincerely, C Darwin'. The editors of the Darwin correspondence (Burkhardt et al. (1985 -), vol. 17, p. 53) date this to 1869, on the assumption that it was sent as the same time as vol. 5, during the Linnean Society's 1868-9 session. Vol. 5 was inscribed by M identically to vol. 1.
