I have the honor to acknowledge receipt of your letter of the 29th May and on behalf of the Borough Council am directed to thank you for the promise of shrubs for the use of the Botanical Gardens.
By this post I am sending instructions to Mr Thomas Denney of 15 Flinders Street, West, who will wait upon you and make arrangements for the proper shipment of whatever you can spare.

Read wrote to Denney on the same day: 'By direction of the Borough Council of Warrnambool I have the honor to request that you will see Dr Mueller of the Botanical Gardens who has kindly promised to supply the Council with some shrubs etc. for the Botanical Gardens here. You will be good enough to see that whatever you procure is properly packed and you will then ship them per S. S. "Edina" addressed to the Borough Council. Please forward memo of charges and shipping note to me.' (Letter press copy book 4, p. 9).
