Letter not found. The text given here is from a report of the meeting of the Council of the Acclimatisation Society of Victoria held on 20 July 1869 (Argus, 21 July 1869, p. 5).
The letter is dated to June, as the Essex was 'entered out' for Melbourne at the London Customs house on 3 June 1869 (London standard, 4 June 1869, p. 7); it is however, possible that the birds were assigned to the port in late May, and the letter sent at the same time.
[Dr. von Mueller read an extract from a letter of Mr. Sclater, secretary to the Zoological Society of London, giving notice of his having shipped, per Essex, a pair of new pheasants for the Acclimatisation Society's gardens.]
