The correspondent is George Bennett, d. 1879. Minutes of the meeting of the Council
held on 19 May 1869 record that a letter from M 'stating that the plants required
for the Municipal Reserves could be obtained any morning at 9 o'clock' was referred
to the Surveyor (Council minutes, VPRS 11090, unit 3, p. 469, VA 439 East Collingwood
Borough Council records, Public Record Office, Victoria). M's letter not found.
Sir,
I have the honor on behalf of the Borough Council of East Collingwood respectfully
to make application to you for some trees and shrubs suitable for planting the Mayors
Park containing six acres one rood reserved as Recreations Grounds for the use of
the inhabitants of East Collingwood. The ground has been trenched and night soil applied
and the greater part will be ready for planting next week when the picket fence will
be completed.
Be so good as inform me when we may send for the plants and what quantity you may
be enabled to supply. The Yan Yean Main passes through the paddock and arrangements
will be made to have the young plants watered.
