Aware, dear Prof. Asa Gray, that you are staying now at Kew,
I beg to ask, whether my large box with museum plants and some seeds for you has
safely arrived. Perhaps in your prolonged stay from home, it might be desirable, that
some one of your friends would unpack the case, and not allow the seeds to loose their
vitality.

Gray was in Europe, mostly based at Kew, for a year from September 1868.
I have quite a little armee
of young American Oaks
& Walnuts now through your generosity & circumspectness.

Many of these American oaks can still be found on the Oak Lawn in the Royal Botanic
Gardens, Melbourne.
With highest regards
Ferd. von Mueller.
