May I ask, dear Mr Manners-Sutton, whether I ought irrespective of the official letter now submitted, also to write to his Grace the Duke of Buckingham for his considerate benignity in as much as this nobleman is now no longer in Office and might therefore not receive any communication on the subject expressive of my gratitude.
your very regardful
Ferd von Mueller

MS annotation: 'Inform that a copy of his official letter to me will be forwarded to the Secy of State by this mail. But that if Dr M should wish himself to add such a private letter to the D of Bk there can be no objection to his taking this step J. H. T. M. S. Feb 28/64'.
A copy of M's official letter, M to H. Manners-Sutton, 22 February 1869 (in this edition as 69-02-22a), was enclosed with Despatch 39 of 27 February 1869, received in the Colonial Office on 19 April 1869 (National Archives, London, CO 447/10, 4323). There is no evidence in that despatch or the associated minute that a private letter to the Duke of Buckingham was enclosed.
