My dear Dr von Mueller
I am in receipt of your letter of the 6th instant with respect to the destruction of trees in the ground around the Royal Society's Hall. It should rather have been sent to the Chief Commissioner of Police as the police are in no way under the control of the City Council.
There is a by law of the Council now awaiting consideration of the Governor in Council forbidding the breeding or keeping of goats anywhere in the City which if it be allowed to come into operation will do something towards abating the nuisance, but in the meantime I see nothing for it but that the Society must keep the ground secure, enclosed and protected.
Yours very truly
E. G. FitzGibbon
Town Clerk
8th February 1869
