It affords me much pleasure to introduce to you Arthur W. Bateman Esq, a young medical
Gentleman, who left for a while his studies at Oxford to invigorate his health by
a voyage to Australia. Mr Bateman brought a letter of introduction to me from Professor
Owen,
and as he is interested in zoology I cannot do better than recommend him to your
friendly aid and counsels while he stays in your beautiful Island.

On 23 February 1869, Bateman wrote to Gunn from the Brisbane Hotel in Launceston enclosing
a letter from M, almost certainly the present letter: 'I purpose starting by a small
steamer for Circular Head tomorrow at 11 a.m. but will take the liberty of calling
on you on my return' (A251 Gunn papers, Mitchell Library, State Library of New South
Wales, Sydney).
