It affords me much pleasure to introduce to you Arthur W. Bateman Esq, a young medical Gentleman, who left for a while his studies at Oxford to invigorate his health by a voyage to Australia. Mr Bateman brought a letter of introduction to me from Professor Owen,

On 23 February 1869, Bateman wrote to Gunn from the Brisbane Hotel in Launceston enclosing a letter from M, almost certainly the present letter: 'I purpose starting by a small steamer for Circular Head tomorrow at 11 a.m. but will take the liberty of calling on you on my return' (A251 Gunn papers, Mitchell Library, State Library of New South Wales, Sydney).
