My dear doctor von Mueller,
I sometime since received a letter from you suggesting the placing of an entrance
gate &c in the fence of the approach to Princes Bridge near the Immigrants Home to
allow of the passage of drays and other vehicles along the south bank of the Yarra
towards the Botanical Gardens

The Public Works Committee of the City Council to whom I mentioned the matter have
desired me in reply to tell you that so soon as the necessary roadway along the river
bank shall be made the Committee will entertain the question

M's letter was read at a meeting of the Melbourne City Council's Public Works Committee
on 17 November 1868: 'Town Clerk instructed to reply that as soon as the drive is made
the Gates shall be erected' (Unit 6, p. 590, VPRS 4037, Public Record Office, Victoria).
