Referring to your letter of the 1st instant
I have the honor by direction of the Health Committee of the City of Melbourne to
reply to your several requests —

M to E. Fitzgibbon, 1 June 1868 (in this edition as 68-06-01a). M's letter was read at a meeting of the Melbourne City Council's Health Committee
on 3 June 1868: 'asking permission to plant the slopes of Princes Bridge agreed to.
Also to cut the head of the stump which stands in the adjoining swamp not agreed to.
Also for permission to impound cattle trespassing on the Road agreed to.' (Unit 1,
VPRS 4039, Public Record Office, Victoria).
1st. as to the planting of trees [along] the slope of the City bridge that the Committee
have much pleasure in complying
2nd. As to cutting of the summit of the single tree in the swamp — the Committee would
rather that it be allowed to show as long as it may symptoms of such vitality as remains to it
3rd. The Committee have no objection to the eradication of the stumps
[near] [...]

Not tree-stumps; M's letter asked permission to 'to remove the natural small basalt-stones
which are cropping out on Jollimont-road'. Point 2 in M's letter referred to 'cutting the summit of the single tree', the 'stump'
mentioned as denied in the minute above.

4th. As to two laborers - these the Committee some time since obtained the sanction
of the City Council for and they trust that the men are duly employed

5th. To allow a fallgate to the path near the Immigrants aid Society's premises To
this the Committee are agreeable
6th So far as their permission can be necessary the Committee accord it to your shooting
goats trespassing between the Immigrants Home and the river
7th And also to have all cattle trespassing there impounded
