editorial addition.
I am directed by the Public Works Committee of the City Council to thank you for your suggestion and offer, to point out that there are no gas pipes in the vicinity of the bridge — and to enquire how you would effect the lighting of one or more lamps if erected.

M's suggestion for a gas lamp to be placed at the Botanic Gardens footbridge has not been found, but was made in letters dated 3 May 1868 and 6 May 1868, cited in E. FitzGibbon to M, 22 May 1868 (in this edition as 68-05-22b), which reported that two lamps, suitable for use with kerosene oil, would be erected. No response by M to the present letter, saying how he envisaged the lamps would be lit, has has been found.
E. G. FitzGibbon
