Sie können sich keine Vorstellung davon machen, verehrter Herr Professor, welche Aufregung u welche Wuth der satanische Anschlag auf das Leben des jungen vortrefflichen Prinzen Alfred hier in allen Kreisen hervorrief! Der gnädigen Vorsehung sei es gedankt dass dem Prinzen das Leben erhalten blieb, u dass die Königin nicht den Jammer eines so wunderbar abgewandten Schreckens-Ereignisses zu tragen hat. Das Attentat wird der unschuldigen u wirklich tief theilnehmenden Bevölkerung Australiens doch immer in den Augen der Gesammtwelt schaden. Wäre die Kugel einen Zoll näher dem Rückgrat eingedrungen, dann wäre der Prinz nicht zu retten gewesen.
Nie werde ich vergessen wie der Prinz in männlicher leutseliger Weise beim Abschied vom Garten hier meine Hand drückte. Über Dr Leichhardt sprach sich der Prinz sehr gütig aus, indem er sich freuete dass dieser strahlende Gelehrte ein Landsmann seines betrauerten Vaters sei.
Leider machen die politischen Verhältnisse augenblicklich hier weitere Massregeln für die Aufsuchung Leichhardt's zur Unmöglichkeit in diesem Jahre. Ich hoffe alles vom Jahr 1869, demjenigen welches vor 100 Jahren Australien unter britische Herrschaft brachte.
Ihre schöne Karte von Leichhardts Zug hat die Damen gar sehr erfreuet. Ich hatte der Doktorin Cutts eine Localität gewidmet, weil diese Dame die Casse des Expeditions-Committees führte. Es scheint nun aber dass diese Localität mit einer andern zusammen falle.
Die Kiste für Dr Sonder, welche das Buch über Prinz Alfreds Reise hier enthält, ist nicht mit dem Great Britain weggekommen. So wird es Sie etwas später, als ich dachte erreichen.

You cannot imagine, esteemed Professor, what excitement and what fury was generated here in all circles by the satanic attack on the life of the excellent young Prince Alfred.

Prince Alfred only barely escaped with his life in an attempted assassination by the Irishman Henry J. O'Farrell on 24 March 1868.
Merciful Providence be thanked, that the Prince's life was spared, and that the Queen will not have to bear the sorrow of such a wonderfully averted terrible incident. This assassination attempt will nonetheless damage the innocent and genuinely deeply sympathetic population of Australia in the eyes of all the rest of the world. If the bullet had hit him just one inch closer to the spine, the Prince could not have been saved.
I shall never forget, how the Prince pressed my hand in a manly and affable manner during the farewells from the Garden here. The Prince spoke very kindly about Leichhardt, and he was pleased that this celebrated savant was a compatriot of his lamented father.

Unfortunately the present political situation here makes further planning for the search after Leichhardt completely impossible this year. I hope everything of the year 1869, the year that 100 years ago brought Australia under British rule.

M had the date wrong. James Cook discovered the east coast of Australia in 1770, eventually claiming possession for Britain of the whole eastern coast on 22 August 1770 at Possession Island, Torres Strait.

because this lady was treasurer of the Expedition Committee. But it now seems that this locality coincides with another one.
