My dear Sir
Please accept my feelings of condolence on hearing of your family losses and of the weakened state of your health. I hope however that your health is perfectly restored and that you have found consolation for the losses which, though painful for us, we must always expect sooner or later.
I am gratified to hear that the fern trunks that I sent you are growing so well and I hope that the others that are on their way to you will do the same.
From Mr Giglioli I have myself received news of Valparaiso.

Now he will have returned to you. Please give him my compliments. The seeds of that you promise me will be a precious acquisition for us. For a long time but always in vain I have tried to introduce this tree. Now I am working on the 6th volume of my Fragmenta which will be completed before the end of the year. The 4th volume of the Flora of Australia

will also soon be finished.

Enclosed you will find a specimen of a Taxad

i.e. a member of the group containing yews, tribe Taxineae in Parlatore’s system.
just received from New Zealand from Dr Kirk. I hope it will still arrive in time for your work on the conifers.

The specimen from Kirk used by Parlatore (1868), p. 495 to describe Dacrydium kirkii was transmitted by M, who gave it this name 'in litt.'; MEL1594303 has with it a description by Kirk dated December 1867, and although it also has a 2008 note by a New Zealand botanist stating 'This specimen was not seen by Parlatore', it is likely that the specimen M sent was part of the same collection.
