Recht freudig ward ich überrascht, verehrter Herr Professor, durch die gütige Übersendung der Abhandlung über M'Intyres Reise u die mehrfachen Exemplare der schönen betreffenden Charte. Nehmen Sie meinen Dank dafür hin. Die Ausrüstung dieser Expedition hat für mich so unsägliche Schwierigkeiten u Zeitverluste herbeigeführt, dass ich mich freue das Wenige des Errungenen zu Ehren kommen zu sehen. Ihre Charten sind wahrhaft prachtvoll u darin stimmte Prinz Alfred mit mir überein wie wir darüber sprachen in meinem Garten. Ich halte es für eine Ehrensache nach des armen Leichhardt Schicksal weiter forschen zu lassen, soweit ichs vermag, da aber am Carpentaria Golf seine Spuren verloren sind wird die Auffindung vielleicht am ehesten von Westaustralien aus gelingen. Ich denke mir, der Unglückliche nahm seinen Weg längs der südlichen Seite des Gebirgs, welches die Carpentaria Flüsse von den südlich fliessenden Gewässern scheidet. Wenn ich die Kameel Expedition von dem südlichen Abhang nach den Nickol-Bay Niederlassungen senden könnte, dann gewönnen wir eine Grundlinie für künftige Exploration rechts u links von dieser Linie.

Hoffentlich kann ich Ihnen mit nächster Post Auskunft über Cadells Forschungen ausführlich geben. Ich habe ihn hier gesehen bei seiner Durchreise u bin seit Jahren mit diesem kühnen u thatkräftigen Manne in Verbindung. Es liegt ein nettes Buch für Sie bereit über Prinz Alfreds Besuch unserer Colonie. Ich hoffe es bald an Dr Sonder mit anderen Schriften, die für Sie bestimmt sind, absenden zu können.

Es ist wahrhaft erhebend, Sie so unermüdlich für die grosse Nordpol Forschung wirken zu sehen. Es kann nicht fehlen, Ihr grosses Werk muss gelingen! Und dann wenden wir uns zum Südpol! Wenn das Menschenleben nur nicht so kurz wäre. —

Es ist soviel zu thun um die Herrlichkeiten u Grösse der Natur zu erkennen und zum Wohl der Menschheit erklärt zu sehen.

agreed with me in this, when we spoke about it in my Gardens. I regard it a matter of honour to continue having poor Leichhardt's fate explored as far as I am able to do so, but as his traces are lost at the Gulf of Carpentaria, success in the search might perhaps best be achieved from Western Australia. I imagine that the unfortunate traveller made his way along the southern side of the mountain range that divides the rivers flowing into the Gulf of Carpentaria from those flowing south. If I could send the camel expedition from the southern slopes to the Nickol Bay settlements,

we would establish a base line for future expeditions to the left and right of it.

In 1867 Francis Cadell led a sea-borne expedition to the north coast of Australia, under the aegis of the Government of SA, to select a site for the proposed capital of the NT.

M may be referring to Petermann’s preface to a treatise on Novaya Zemlya by J. Spörer that was published as a supplementary number (Ergänzungsheft No. 21) of the 1867 volume of Petermann’s journal. The preface, dated 25 September 1867, included a call for a German North Pole expedition. The issue in which it appeared was probably distributed at the same time as the last ordinary issue of the journal for the year, in which McIntyre’s diary appeared.

It cannot fail, your great work must succeed! And then we shall turn to the South Pole! If only human life were not so short.

There is so much to do to detect the glories and the grandeur of nature and to see it expounded for the benefit of mankind.
