Town Clerk's Office
Town Hall, Melbourne
20th November 1867.
Sir
I have the honor to inform you that it is the intention of the Corporation of Melbourne to invite the children of the City to a pic nic during the stay of his Royal highness the Duke of Edinburgh and I have to ask whether there will be any objection to the entertainment taking place in the North Botanical Reserve.
1
No reply has been found, but on 27 November a 'free banquet', which became somewhat chaotic, not restricted to children, took place in the North Botanic Reserve. For accounts, see 'The free banquet', Argus, 29 November 1867, p. 5, and J. Knight (1868), pp. 99-102.
I have the honor to be
Sir
Your most obedient servant
E. G. FitzGibbon
