Vic.
Sir
I have the honor to solicit that you will be pleased to sanction the expenditure additionally
of fifty pounds Sterling for earthworks, garden arrangement & more extended gravelling
at Toorack.
The original estimate was three hundred pounds
but only one hundred has been expended yet. I venture to draw your attention to the
fact, that the Duke of Edinburgh may possibly arrive already in the beginning of next
month & that thus the early completion of this work at Toorack appears to me very
recommendable

The estimate made in M to J. Grant, 9 August 1867 (in this edition as 67-08-09a) of £297:1: 4 was regarded as an overestimate, see notes to that letter. Notes to
M to D. Gillies, 29 June 1868, rehearse the background to this letter.
I have the honor to be,
Sir,
your very obedient
Ferd. Mueller
The honorable Jam. Macph. Grant

M was informed by W. Wardell, Inspector General of Public Works, on 26 September 1867
that M. Hervey, Commissioner of Public Works, was 'unable to spare anything out of
the sum granted for new works under this Department as it is not only exhausted but already overdrawn'.
