The provision of ground for the Immigrants Home's cows had been a recurrent issue. In June 1861, the Home sought space for three cows to supply milk and M was concerned about adequate fencing (N. Bickford to C. Hodgkinson, 27 June 1861 (in this edition as M61-06-27)), and the matter arose again in M to C. Hodgkinson, 20 February 1864, in M to W. Wardell, 16 January 1865 (in this edition as 65-01-16a) and the related M to J. McCulloch, 16 January 1865, and in M to the Immigrants Aid Society, May 1867 (in this edition as 67-05-00a).
M's letter was referred to the Chief Secretary's Department on 15 July 1867, from whence it was forwarded on 18 July o George Duncan, Inspector of Industrial and Reformatory Schools, minuted: 'can this be effected without inconvenience at P. Bridge [i.e. Princes Bridge]'. The letter was returned to the Chief Secretary's office on 29 July, then referred to the Crown Lands office on 31 July minuted: 'for the information of the President of CL&W [i.e. Crown Lands and Works]'. Duncan's advice is not indicated on the file.
