Sir
I have the honor by direction of the Council of the Acclimatisation Society to thank
you on their behalf for the supply of trees so kindly granted by you for planting
in the Royal Park.
I am also directed to enclose you some seeds of the Martingoola
tree which Mr John Kirkham of Bendigo has sent to the President and to request that you will be good enough to
try them in one of your hot houses.

The published reports of the meeting of the Council of the Acclimatisation Society held on 25 June (for example
Argus, 26 June 1867, p. 5;
Age
(Melbourne), 26 June 1867, p. 5) spell the name this way and describe it as 'a native of Natal'. The spelling is probably a corruption of the Zulu name
Amatungulu, usually identified as
Carissa macrocarpa. In B76.12.07 and later editions, M has an entry for
C.
arduina
that includes references to other species, all described as being suitable for hedge plants
and yielding succulent fruit; he gave no common name.
I have the honor to be
Sir
Your most Obedt Sert
Geo Sprigg
