The Assistant Commissioner of Crown Lands and Survey, C. Hodgkinson, read M's letter before forwarding it to Grant on 15 June 1867, who approved M's request on 22 September. The application was then forwarded to the Under Treasurer together with an expenditure authority on 25 September. The Under Treasurer stated on 7 October 1867 that the authority had been withdrawn but that an account for the amount to be remitted could be forwarded. The account was duly referred to M for signature and then transmitted to the Treasury. On 23 December 1867 the Under Treasurer stated that: 'The Crown Agents have been reqd. to [make] this payment (under present crisis) out of funds in their hands'. M was informed of this on 27 December and on 31 December returned the file ‘with best thanks'.
40 copies of the work will be received of the work
