Letter not found. The text given here is from 'European plants for Australia,' Journal of botany, vol. 5, pp. 244-5 (B67.08.02). It is dated to May as the latest likely date that it could have been sent to have been included in the issue published on 1 August 1867. Seemann prefaced the letter with the observation: 'We desire to call the attention of our readers to a request which we have received from our correspondent Dr. F. Mueller, of the Melbourne Botanic Gardens, in the hope that without much effort in their botanical excursions some may be able to further the object which he has in view.'
I should like to introduce not only to the Lagoon in our botanic gardens and its banks but also to suitable localities in our mountain glens, lakes, etc., some of the very ornamental European swamp and other plants of the kinds mentioned below or of others of similar habits. May I therefore ask your kind assistance in begging you to collect for me, during your excursions, seeds (or living plants, if readily available), and forward them by one of the fast-sailing vessels to my address. In exchange I shall be most happy to send to you seeds of our beautiful Australian plants. To indicate the class of plants specially referred to, I would name the following, and must leave it to you to add such others as you may have an opportunity to procure:—
Lychnis Flos-cuculi, L.

L. vulgaris, L.
