Sir,
By direction of the Governor I have the honor to inform you that the Copies of the
further Reports relative to the Leichardt
Search Expedition, forwarded
to the Secretary of State by General Carey, have been duly acknowledged.

The Colonial Office forwarded to the Royal Geographical Society Duncan McIntyre's letter of 2 May 1866 to his uncle, and William Sloman's letter of 7 June 1866 to the Ladies' Leichhardt Search Committee reporting McIntyre's death (see notes to W. Sloman to M, 7 June 1866). These were published as 'Last letter of Mr Duncan McIntyre. Leader of the Leichhardt
Search Expedition, and an account of his death', in the
Proceedings of the Royal Geographical Society of London, vol. 11, 1866-7, pp. 42-46 (i.e. McIntyre (1866a) and Sloman (1866)). McIntyre's text was lightly edited by M.

On 8 October 1866, the Secretary of State for the Colonies, the Earl of Carnarvon, wrote to Sir Henry Manners Sutton: 'I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of General Carey's Despatch no
35, of the 27th of July forwarding copies of further reports relative to the Leichardt [i.e. Leichhardt] Search Expedition'. Carnarvon went on to express the sentiments reported by Manners Sutton in the next paragraph of this letter.
The Secretary of State expresses his great regret at the death of Mr McIntyre who,
the Earl of Carnarvon states, appears to have been peculiarly fitted to conduct such
an Expedition.
