The Secretary of State for the Colonies, the Earl of Carnarvon, wrote to the Governor of Victoria, J. H. T. Manners-Sutton, on 6 July 1866 acknowledging the receipt of a despatch sent by Manners-Sutton's predecessor, Sir Charles Darling, conveying a letter Darling had requested from M regarding the position and prospects of the Leichhardt Search Expedition (see M to C. Darling, 20 April 1866).

Sir,
I am directed by His Excellency the Governor to inform you that the letter addressed by you to Sir Charles Darling, relative to the Leichardt Search Expedition was duly forwarded to, and received by the Secretary of State for the Colonies.
A copy of your communication was transmitted from the Colonial office to the Royal Geographical Society
