Die grässliche Weise in welcher Ihr armer Schwager seinen Tod fand kam zu meiner Kunde u dieses Ereignis des Schreckens muss Ihrer armen Gemahlin Gesundheit sehr nachtheilig gewesen sein. Es wäre zu wünschen, dass die Strafen, deren die grässlichsten Bösewichter des frühern Jahrhunderts unterworfen wurden wieder erneut werden könnten, um ein Beispiel teuflischen Naturen hingestellt zu werden.

Doch ich will dies herzzerreissende Ereignis nicht in Ihre Erinnerung heraufbeschwören. Es ist recht freundlich dass Sie mir den Ranunculus Lyallii gesandt. Ich will ihn in meinem kühlen schattigen Farrnthale pflegen.

Von dem genialen Chevalier u seiner Gemahlin werde ich dann nun recht viel von Ihnen hören.

Für die neue Sendung neuseeländischer Pflanzen bin ich sehr dankbar. Bei der Eifersucht J. Hookers kann ich wohl keinen weiteren wissenschaftlichen Gebrauch davon machen als den, dass ich wie die Gelegenheit kommt beim Vergleich mit den Pflanzen Australiens etwas darüber sage.

Vor nicht Langem sandte ich Ihnen eine Kiste Pflanzen. Wenn nun Hr Chevalier mir recht umständlich mittheilt wie Sie wohnen u was Sie gebrauchen, werde ich mehr senden.

The horrible manner in which your poor brother-in-law found his death came to my knowledge. This terrible event must have been very unfavourable for your poor wife's health. It would be desirable, if the punishments meted out to the most heinous villains in earlier centuries could be brought back to set an example for evil natures.

George Dobson, aged 26, older brother of Haast's wife Mary, was brutally murdered by bushrangers on 28 May 1866 in Grey Valley, NZ. His body was not found until 6 July. The murderers were caught, tried, sentenced and hanged in October. During this time Mary Haast was in the early stages of pregnancy with her second child, George, who was born 7 February 1867. See H. F. von Haast (1948), chap. 38.

But I do not want to recall this heart-rending event to your memory. It is very kind, that you sent me the . I shall tend it in my cool shady fern gully.

I shall be hearing a great deal about you from the genial Mr Chevalier and his wife.

Nicolas Chevalier had been visiting NZ.

I am very grateful for the new consignment of New Zealand plants. With J. Hooker's jealousy I can probably make no further scientific use of them, other than to say something about them in comparison with Australian plants, should the opportunity arise.

Not long ago I sent you a case with plants. Now when Mr Chevalier tells me in detail how you live and what you could use, I shall send more.
